Long story short: the Yaris sold in the US is a rebadged Mazda 2, so homologating the GR Yaris to sell here would be starting completely from scratch. Doing a GR Corolla at least saves crash testing etc.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
C&D guess the GR Corolla will get the usual hot hatch bits like upgraded suspension, brakes, wheels & tires. They think the GR Yaris awd system will be left out in favor of fwd , but a manual transmission will be available. No mention of an LSD one way or the other.

Article cays 2022. Heck, I just got the new issue in the mail this morning, and it says the same thing.

I never thought I’d live to see the day of a "market adjustment” on a Yaris. Looking forward to it

That chrome trim on the lower rear bumper pretending to be exhaust tips drive me nuts every time I see them .
I like the rest of the car, just clips those stupid things off!

It better have a lsd, especially if it’s at the $30,000 mark and without AWD. The SI has one for less money (less power though too). I want it to be going up against the Veloster N.

what are the odds this world makes it to 2025?

The image from the article is a render. It looks like the artist took an image of the Corolla XSE hatchback and slightly enlarged its fake exhaust tips.
Maybe the real GR will get real exhaust tips?

257 hp is A LOT to get out of a 1.6 liter. It’ll be interesting to see if the aftermarket will be able to squeeze any more out of it.

2025 is the date I expect the 2022 models to actually go on sale

The Si doesn’t even have that much less power. It’s rated at 205 hp but stock examples regularly dyno at 200+ to the wheels. A quick flash tune bumps it to 230 to the wheels. (I’m a big fan of the Si.)

The Civic Si 1.5 liter is rated at 205 h p but regularly puts that number down to the wheels. It’ll do 230 whp with a flash tune and no hardware upgrades, and goes up from there if you add bolt-ons . They’ll do 300ish whp with a bigger turbo.

More power is a mistake on this car. Install the appropriate breathing mods and look for as many ways as possible to lose weight. Complete .

I am a big fan of the SI too, I just wish you could get a hatch SI. That would be perfect for me. You can get the Sport but no lsd. The SI is on my list for potential future cars though in sedan form I’d get a 19 or newer though so that I’d have the volume knob and better buttons for infotainment and climate control. I really like this gen civic.

It isn't that much. A mildly tuned and Ford warranty backed Fiesta ST got you to 230.

The landscape will be interesting soon. Hyundai will have the Veloster N DCT, Sonata N/N-Line, possibly updated Elantra GT N-Line, possibly released Kona N, all by the time the Corolla comes out. Let alone new WRX (maybe), Civic Si/Type R.
The field seems crowded and that’s a good thing!

The Si is only sedan & hatch because all the Si specific stuff is built in North America but all Civic hatchbacks are built in England. Honda is shutting down that England plant though, so when hatch production consolidates into a location where the Si is built , there could be an Si hatch.

That would be awesome and your insight makes sense. That could be a perfect fun daily for me. The hatch adds so much more practicality.

Any word on a crackle & pop tune for the civic? I feel like it just needs a bit more juvenile nature. Typical Honda in that they make a product to the point where it is so refined it’s a touch boring.

Yeah, that’s kinda my point. If Toyota is putting this thing at the level that tuners would take it to. There’s nowhere to go from there.

I mean, the CTR has over 300 to the front wheels, so I can’t say I agree.

I’m excited for this. But also nervous. The regular Corolla hatch is a nice looking car, but I’m worried Toyota will will ruin it visually with tacky cosmetic add-ons or a hideous front clip like the Camry SE/XSE. Still, will be interesting to compare to the Mk8 GTI, Civic Si and Veloster N. Now if only Mazda would stick the 2.5T in the 3 already!
![]() 04/20/2020 at 12:41 |

Seems promising, but I don't think it could beat the Veloster N which may be getting more power and just seems more fun.

The GR Yaris is actually a different platform to the Yaris sold in Europe too. It’s a unique chassis being sold to the public for homologation for the rally program.

The HDMI port exhaust trim?

The Veloster N has the disadvantage of being shaped like a Veloster. Back seat & cargo room are much less than more traditional 2-box 5-door hatches. Ditto for rear visibility.

I’m very interested in an AWD hot Yaris. I am very much not interested in a FWD hot Corolla.

Honestly, rear space and visibility are probably the Corolla’s weak points too. High trunk floor and aggressively sloped rear glass take away a lot of cargo space while the large C pillars make the backup camera a requirement when reversing.

A friend of mine has one and it’s pretty nice, but his is a coupe. I agree with you that the hatch is a better body style. I personally think the current generation civic is sorta-ugly-in-a-non-dealbreaker-way in all of its forms, so you might as well get one that’s super practical. (i like the car a lot, but its styling is slightly awkward to my eyes)
![]() 04/20/2020 at 14:44 |

I love the Veloster N, because I think its an amazing performance car bargain, but it’s real ugly in a way the current corolla is not. And i’m sure despite being not that practical for its class, the Corolla is still a lot more practical than a veloster.
![]() 04/20/2020 at 14:48 |

The closest I’ve been to a Corolla hatch is seeing them in traffic so I wouldn’t know. But I gotta believe those limitations are more within the context of a traditional 5-door hatch shape, vs the Veloster being smaller than the traditional 5-door hatch shape.

Yup, Hyundai should just give us the i30N already
